One of the things that is on my wishlist for a very long time is a proper food processor. One that can make dough, chop herbs, slice cucumber etc. I have to say that I love the Kitchenaid food processors, but they cannot chop herbs OR slice cucumber. And this is very important for me because i love my cucumber sliced evenly.
What to choose
There were 2 food processors I looked at: the Philips HR7781 and the Magimix 5200xl. I know Magimix from the time I worked in a restaurant. They are strong and simple, exactly what I like. Unfortunately the price is pretty high. The Philips comes with a lot of accessoires, has a great build quality and comes with a long warranty period of 5 years on the product and 15 on the motor. Amazon sold it for 220 Euros, what is actually much cheaper than the Magimix. So I bought the Philips. About 3 days later a massive box arrived. I directly saw that the food processor is much bigger than I expected. But hey, you never know how many children I will have in the future!
I believe that the name of the series “robust collection” is really well chosen. The build quality of the food processor is really good. The machine stands very stable on the ground because of its heavy body from metal. The plastic bowl also looks pretty strong and is very big!
Trying out my new kitchen machine
With such a nice machine just unpacked I could not wait to make something with it. I wanted to try to make pizza dough with it because according to the manual it only needs to be in the food processor for 1 minute, using the kneading hook. Normally I do the kneading by hand, and actually enjoy doing it, but I wanted to give it a try with the Philips.
Making pizza dough using the kneading hook
Surprisingly enough it really took just a minute to finish the kneading. I was pretty happy with the result. The food processor showed its brutal power and did not have any problem kneading 1 kg dough. One thing I did wrong though is using handwarm water in the recipe. I do this always so that the yeast will start quicker, but kneading in the food processor makes the dough already pretty warm (and sticky). So next time I will use cold water instead.
For the tomato sauce I use the chopping knife
While my pizza dough was resting, I decided to clean quickly all the parts of the food processor and make a basic tomatosauce. I used the chopping knife for this. I put the tomatos in the bowl, added some salt, pepper, olive oil, garlic and oregano and mixed it using the pulse button. The skin of the overripe tomatos I used had no change against the razor sharp chopping knife. The sauce was finished within seconds, and had a nice structure.
A very good but not perfect food processor
I am very happy with the Philips HR7781. It is big, strong, and the accessoires are sharp. The parts are easy to clean and I have the feeling that this machine will serve me for a very long time. But… I don’t know what will happen when a tool gets blunt. The warranty is just for the motor. Magimix sells all the accessoires separate. I believe that Philips doesn’t do that. The lid of the bowl also doesn’t close very well. If you would fill the bowl with soup for example, you can be sure that a part of the soup will end up next to the food processor. Especially when you use the pulse button.
This is why it’s is not a perfect food processor. But for chopping herbs, slicing cucumber, making pizza dough and mixing semi dry goods the Philips HR7781 does a very good job.
